Open letter to Nikolai Bezrukov
About his article

"Open Source Software Development as a Special Type of Academic Research (Critique of Vulgar Raymondism) by Nikolai Bezroukov
First Monday, volume 4, number 10 (October 1999),
URL: http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue4_10/bezroukov/index.html"

Your article is powerful. Of course it will help many developers to build up more objective view on the issue. It is a perfect critics and everything is 90% true. BUT it looks at the Open Source only the negative way.

I think if this article will be seen by a developer with weak independence, one will never participate in OSS projects.

The author of this letter began to participate himself in one of such projects not long ago and this article was like a bomb, explosed in the core of his heart. He will continue to go, but he was shaken in his confidence. This may be compared with telling to a small child that Santa Claus doesn't exist.

Breaking the Internet Dream and annihilating the idea of Open System and Open Software IS AN INTELLECTUAL SIN.

Dear Professor Fleck,

Thank you for publishing your article on First Monday. It gives me a baseline against which to measure our Internet use and policies and documents the issues for my staff and my boss. I will use the data for planning and for recommendations for policies and staff training.

Do you plan to do an update? In 18 months? I hope sooner.

Sincerely,

Margo,

Thank you for the kind words. It is gratifying to know that what one does may have a positive impact on others. We do plan on another survey in about 12 months. Any suggestions you have for question inclusion would be appreciated.

We do plan on including a question on Internet gaming. We also know that libraries are impacted by use and policies. If you have some suggestions for questions that would help you develop policy, we would be glad to consider those in the next version.

Sincerely,

Bob
