First Monday's first year has been quite an exciting and stimulating one. Articles in the six issues of 1996 have touched on many of the perplexing topics facing the Internet and its users today, from copyright and freedom of digital access to privacy and education.
In this the last issue for the year, we are providing you with the first half of new book on education and computers by Frederick Bennett. Entitled "Computers as Tutors," the rest of the book will appear in the January, 1997 issue. We think this book will the first of many that we will present in serial fashion in the virtual pages of this journal. We welcome your comments.
We appreciate the continued support of you, the readers of First Monday, throughout all of 1996. Your encouraging remarks and helpful suggestions improved First Monday in the course of its first six issues. We, the editors of First Monday, and our publisher, Munksgaard International Publishers of Copenhagen, will continue to improve this journal even more next year. Beginning with the January issue, we plan to alter the way in which First Monday is available on the Internet.
Beginning in 1997, when you visit the First Monday server at http://www.firstmonday.dk, you will continue to find all of the usual information that we have always made available for you about First Monday. For the first time, we will also make available a contents button, that will provide access to tables of content of First Monday articles. In addition, we will make it possible for you to access the abstracts of articles published in First Monday. For the abstracts, we will ask you to register your e-mail address with First Monday; we will then send you the abstracts on a monthly basis as part of your usual digital correspondence. You can always "unsubscribe" at any time and this access will be free. Digital agents, robots, and search engines will see the tables of content of First Monday for the first time.
For 112 Danish kroner, or about $US 20, a charter subscriber to First Monday will receive:
1) access to the current issue of First Monday, and all of the articles, features, and other stories in it, for one year;
2) electronic mail containing the table of contents and abstracts of every new issue of First Monday, in advance of its release, with pointers to the server, for one year; and,
3) access to the entire back file of First Monday, that is all articles that have been published in 1996, for one year;
In addition, we will also make available very shortly a CD-ROM, collecting all of the articles published in 1996. More news about this compact disk will appear shortly in First Monday.
First Monday's actual subscription process will be straightforward, giving you a variety of ways to sign up for all of First Monday's features. We look forward to providing you with the best Internet reading in 1997. As always, we look forward to your comments and suggestions.
