First Monday

Guido Sohne

Guido is an African technologist who has always tried to move beyond the norm (and tendency) for Africans to be regarded as technologically backward by benchmarking himself against the best technology people world–wide. His vision of Africa as a technology contender is informed by his own experience — which has led him to propose a pan–African developer network called African Hackers.

His desire for equity and equality has led him to work extensively with the free and open source movements as well as participating in global civil society as a representative and defender of the less fortunate — indicted simply because they work in and live in the wrong places.

Although he does not expect his work to be completed within his lifetime, Guido views the advancement of technology and freedom in Africa to be a necessary condition to lifting the continent out of its current misery by moving production from exploitative extraction of raw materials to symbiotic extraction of human expertise and time.
